Board Meetings and Public Comment Procedures
Welcome to TPA Board Meeting! We appreciate your interest and involvement in making our charter school a success. Citizen comments are an important part of the public process. TPA board takes comments seriously and considers them in deliberations.
- Meetings: We welcome the public to our meetings. The North Carolina Open Meetings Law gives "any person" the right to attend an official meeting of a public body, with exceptions for closed sessions. North Carolina law does not limit access to meetings to a specific category of people or a profession, such as "the traditional press." Anyone may attend. The right to attend official meetings does not include a right to comment or participate. As a matter of practice, however, public bodies may give the public an opportunity to speak at meetings. The presiding officer of a public body may direct a person to leave a meeting if he or she interrupts, disturbs, or disrupts an official meeting. If the person creating a disturbance refuses to leave, the state may charge him or her with a misdemeanor.
- Seating: Board members, TPA Managing Director and the Assistant Principal/Academic Director are invited to sit at the board table. A public seating area is provided for parents, teachers, and other guests.
- Public Comments: The Board of Thunderbird Preparatory Academy welcomes citizens to come forward at the monthly Regular Board Meeting and speak on subjects related to Thunderbird Preparatory Academy. Speakers can address the Board on: (a) agenda items that the Board will vote on (“agenda speakers”); or (b) subjects that are not on the official meeting agenda (“Hearing of Citizens”). All Public Comment requests must register in advance using the online Speaker Request Form 48 hours in advanced of the meeting. The Board will consider those items for inclusion on the next board meeting agenda. The board may decide that the issue is better suited for staff or a Board Committee to respond. You will be notified 24 hours in advance of the meeting whether the item will be included. If your public comment is selected for the board meeting you will have 3 minutes. The remarks must be related to the board meetings agenda. Up to three speakers will be selected for public comment per meeting as deemed appropriate by the board. Please keep in mind that the board will listen to your public comment but they will not respond at the board meeting.
